Scattered Prairie
Scattered Prairie, 2020, Site-specific, Restored prairie, twigs, pine needles
“Truth and acknowledgment are critical to building mutual respect and connection across all barriers of heritage and difference. We begin this effort to acknowledge what has been buried by honoring the truth.
We are standing on the ancestral lands of many indigenous people, but most recently the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ, Ihanktonwan Dakota Oyate, and Omaha. We pay respects to their elders past and present. Please take a moment to consider the many legacies of violence, displacement, migration, and settlement that bring us together here today.”
Scattered Prairie is about the need for prairie conservation; something that was once abundant now is like scattered islands with boundaries and roads. It is important to not only acknowledge that we are standing on what was once prairie but also we are standing on ancestral land.
